Yep that's why I said it'd be easier for the PS3. _________________

YEah tried a few times yesterday to no avail.
thought about buying a game yesterday, almost bought lbp or Fallout 3 but then decided that I am still enjoying Wipeout HD too much to justify buying something else. Has anyone else put a decent effort into WHD?

Yeah there are videos on utube of how to do this, quite simple apparently - pop the current one out, pop in a new 2.5 5400rpm sata (they say to use 5400rpm in the tutorials that i have read). Power on and the ps3 will format it. I would like to do this in the new year and upgrade to a 250 gig or possibly 320 gig. I am just thinking now, doesnt fat32 file system have problems with disk over the 128gig mark? I cant remember.

That depends on the bios, not the filesystem. One limitation of the fat32 filesystem that might affect the PS3 is the 4gb file sizes.
I have read that a 160gb version of the PS3 exists so i doubt you'll run into any problems. _________________ Make those forensic guys work like WHORES

^ Yeah i was just wondering out loud. I just remember some problem i had with the first hard drive i had (for pc) that was larger then 120 gig, windows would only recognise up to about 128gig. (must have been a windows problem?). I have seen those 160 gig ps3's for sale for $1000 (around may this year). I got my 40gig ps3 from a Ebay retailer for $600 with GTA4 (again, in may this year). I thought to charge $1000 for a modded ps3 was ok until a found out the only mod was to swap hdd's and no extra chip installed or anything.

BTW PS3 owners, you can go all the way up to
500GB
now if you use the right drive - Eg the Samsung SpinPoint HM500LI, which I've installed in mine. The console recognised it with no problems and it works a treat.
The main requirement is that it has to be a 2.5" SATA drive. 5400rpm is recommended as that is the speed of the original Seagate drive, and generates less heat than a 7200rpm drive. The good thing for us is that these are really cheap now.
Tip for you Seab4ss: When you change your drive tonight, be VERY VERY VERY careful with the 4 screws holding the drive in the caddy. I cannot stress enough how important it is for you to use the perfect size screwdriver so that you don't wear away (strip) the screw heads. So many people (myself included) have had trouble with these. _________________

Yeah they're just small phillips head screws, but are very easily worn because they're factory-screwed in really tight, so if you try to force em with the wrong size driver, you'll wear away the notches. If you see this start to happen, STOP IMMEDIATELY and change to a driver that fits perfectly, otherwise you won't be able to get them out without a tedious process of filing and using pliers.
Good luck with it! Everything is really very easy except for those 4 screws holding the drive in the caddy.

Cheers, i'll print that out b4 i leave work.
EDIT: Damn, physically it was easy to install. But now when i turn it on it says i need to insert mdeia with firmware 2.53 or higher. I have a external hdd that i use with my ps3 all the time for videos, so i downloaded the latest update 2.60 and put it on the hdd under PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP and plug it into the unit. The ps3 says to press select + PS button to search for firmware, i do that and it just reboots into an endless cycle. I have found heaps of forum threads with the same prob but they all got resolved. So i tried burning the update to a cd r, still no go. I guess i will try a dvd-r and see how that goes, i dont hold high hopes though.
I have followed the instructions and it just keeps looping when i try to install the firmware update. I understand that the firmware is too large for the memory so it install some on the hdd, but its as if its not even really searching for it
I have followed guides such as these:
http://www.driverheaven.net/hardware-discussion-support/163176-new-hard-drive-playstation-3-but-will-not-format.html
http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=ps3&thread.id=3331855
I have tried numerous ways such as attaching the external hdd when the ps3 is off, then when it is on etc.
The only other thing i really want to try is downloading the 2.53 update as thats what i must have had on there.
